We stopped periodically, taking listening breaks for Lucas and water breaks for me. Sometimes we walked, and sometimes we jogged. We ate some nuts and berries along the way, but my stomach still growled. We saw animals that Lucas could shoot, but without a fire, we couldn’t cook them. He hadn’t heard anything from anyone on the dark side. I couldn’t help but think of them like that now. My only real knowledge of good versus evil was from the one Star Wars movie I’d seen. But as far as sci-fi went, I was pretty much living a good versus evil nightmare. Horrible creatures were out to get me and pull me away from all good things. They took on “other forms” and spoke screeching languages and burned people in fires. It was all too much to think about. Maybe it was okay that we didn’t have food. I’m not sure my stomach could have handled anything anyway.

Lucas stopped so abruptly that I walked right into him. He didn’t turn, but I could tell from his posture that he was listening. After a moment more, he turned quickly and looked at me with his eyes wide.

“It’s a scout, climb on my back and don’t say a word.” As he said this, he dumped the water and switched his pack to the front of him, already bending down for me to climb on his back.. As soon as my arms were around his neck, he took off running, dodging trees and bushes. If he hadn’t had to dodge anything, I think he would have been sprinting, which was no easy task with me on his back.

I tried to make myself lighter by shifting my weight on his back, which of course, wasn’t possible, but I wanted to help. I wanted to ask where we were going and if we were going to make it in time, but I did the best thing I could to help, and I didn’t say a word. I wondered if they could track my voice or even hear it easier than they could Lucas’s.

He ran for what must have been ten minutes without stopping. Once he stopped, I could hear his labored breathing coming in gasps. He hadn’t been tired after those much longer runs when we were running away from camp, so I was surprised that he was struggling now. His breathing was slowing, though, which meant he had at least some strength left. I knew he was listening, and I continued to do my part by not saying a word.

Another breath and we were off running again. Well, Lucas was running, and I was holding on, doing my best not to strangle him as he carried the packs and me.

It seemed like the same amount of time had passed again when he whispered, “We are almost there.” I had no idea where “there” was, but I continued not to speak. I even caught myself holding my breath, which really didn’t help in any way.

We were now in a much denser area with a lot of rocks and bushes.
